The Preparatory Company (Prep) is designed for the student who makes dance a major priority. Members must possess exemplary technique, skills, and professionalism. While this company does not compete or attend conventions, they do perform the opening and closing numbers in our annual Spring Recital and at least one number in our Teamwork Concert in the spring. Members also participate in community events throughout the year. There are five levels in the Preparatory Company.

Membership in the Prep Company is by invitation only. To qualify for consideration, students must be enrolled in ballet and jazz classes at PCD for at least a full year and turn 10 years old by the time the next school year begins. All qualified students are evaluated by their PCD teachers and scored on dance technique, attendance, work ethic, and overall dance abilities, and then invited for evaluation in a special Prep audition.

When chosen for the Prep Company, dancers are required to consistently attend their special company classes, consisting of two ballet and two jazz classes per week. Though these company classes are the only mandatory classes for Prep students, they are strongly encouraged to enroll in additional classes to continue improving technique, strength, and flexibility. An invitation for the Prep Company designates that dancer as a leader at PCD and a leader in their dance community.

While Prep Company members are not required to attend dance conventions or competitions, they are invited to attend any conventions that our PCD Performing Companies attend.

Preparatory Company Requirements

  • PCD Preparatory Company members CANNOT be a member of any outside private studio competition team or Performance Company, with the exception of high school or middle school dance teams. This policy is intended to reduce the risk of injury. This policy is necessary also to reduce potential conflicts with rehearsals or company classes.

  • You must purchase a Prep Company uniform:

·       Black leotard

·       Black dance shorts

·       Black ballet wrap skirt

·       Pink footed or transition tights

·       Tan stirrup tights

Additionally, each dancer is required to wear the following shoes to class. These shoes are not limited to a style or brand and you may feel free to purchase them at your convenience.

·       Pink Canvas Split-Sole Ballet

·       Tan Leather Slip-On Jazz

·       Tan Half-Shoes

  • Students in Prep II-IV are required to take their two Prep ballet classes and two Prep jazz classes. We recommend supplementing your company classes with as many additional classes as you choose. Students in Prep I and V are required to take their one Prep ballet and Prep jazz class, and are strongly encouraged to take an additional ballet class at the Ballet III/VI level, respectively. Please contact PCD with any questions regarding placement in additional classes.

  • All Prep dancers must attend both mandatory special workshops/choreography sessions for our opening and closing production numbers seen at Teamwork and the Spring Recital. Dates for the Opening and Closing Workshops are TBD (typically in October and January).

  • You must have consistent attendance in ALL of your classes throughout the year. You MUST inform PCD via e-mail (prestoncenterdance@att.net) if you are going to miss a class. You are allowed six unexcused absences during the year per class.

Questions about tuition and fees may be directed to the PCD office.
